John Bell runs a smooth operation.

Once this M.D. stops racing toward a cure for breast cancer, he might consider his dream of racing NASCAR. Until then, John is fighting cancer full-throttle. “As the leading cancer in women, early detection translates to survival,” says the Director of UT Medical Center’s Cancer Institute. “The whole spectrum begins and ends with education,” he says. Most patients have no immediate family history, so the challenge is affecting change in large populations to take initiative. “A mammogram without a physical exam is like a sandwich without bread,” John proclaims. The question remains, however, why only 60% of eligible women get tested. “I want people to have access and be educated. The charts in my office mean patients are alive and living normally as breast cancer survivors. That’s progress.” But it’s perfection—converting that 60% to 100%—that John strives for every day. “I long to improve and be part of the solution, not part of the problem.” What’s the best thing about reading skirt!?: It’s light and entertaining, yet informative.
