Vicki Baumgartner tills her soul.

Green acres is the place to be, for Vicki anyway. 15 years ago, this modern-day Demeter waved goodbye to suburbia, and now gives farming a green thumbs up. “I can’t imagine not having a place to garden,” she admits.  Home is 22 acres, ripe with orchards and herb, vegetable, and flower gardens. “To walk by my gardens and pick what’s for dinner is unbelievably gratifying.”  Vicki is convinced everyone benefits from growing a garden—even in a windowsill. “It gives you an appreciation for where food comes from,” she says. “Especially when you can pick a pepper and know it’s pesticide-free.” One down side to rural living used to be no pizza delivery. “I canned marinara by the case.” Canned pickles, apple butter and jams have become other fruits of her labor. While others golf, Vicki mows. “It’s a spiritual connection with me. Plus, I drive a mean John Deere!”

Ya know, I appreciate this story because folks are moving towards a simpler life, or many of them are. The rush, rush of life, the traffic congestion, the unhealthiness of fast food and restaurant food in general is very much a part of my awareness of what life is 'supposed' to be. I would love to have the opportunity to live like you are, although it will make you appreciative of the simple things we take advantage of in life (such as pizza delivery), it'll also make you appreciative that you aren't close enough to the traffic congestion and the rush-rush of life!
