Shona Hamlin is on fire.

But don’t be alarmed. The 15-year veteran firefighter is simply burning it up. Shona works 24-hour shifts, serves Air National Guard duty, teaches EMT training and happens to be KFD’s first female Captain. “It’s a challenge, but I love coming to work and dealing with the unexpected,” she says. “You’re the calm in a bad situation,” she describes. “You want to reassure the patient without instilling a false sense of hope.” Station 15 is Shona’s second family, but she doesn’t take heat from her “brothers.” “I can relax here. They don’t expect me to clean up after them.”  On a fire, Shona’s in charge until an Assistant Fire Chief arrives. “I’m always involved on the scene. We’re all working together,” she says. Like the goddess, Tara, Shona is a “protectress” of individuals, dwellings and districts; compassion sparks their ability to endure stressful moments. “Particularly fires,” she admits. “People are losing their property, dwelling, and sometimes their life. That’s difficult, but I still love the thrill.”
